Biography
Dr. Bonnie Callen joined the faculty of the College
of Nursing at UT in the fall of 2003. She completed her PhD at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying nutritional health
of community dwelling old-old. She received her master’s
degree from UW-Madison as an advance practice nurse in community
health nursing. Her clinical experience has ranged from acute
care, including a year in intensive care nursing in Viet Nam,
to long term care and community settings.
Office on Aging
The College of Nursing has been represented at the Office on Aging for many years. Sandra McGuire was the CON representative until 2004 when Dr. Bonnie Callen took over this
position. Dr. Callen has been involved with the Office on Aging in many areas
including:
Teaching
- The College of Nursing partners with Project LIVE (Living Independently through Volunteer
Efforts), sending Community Health students for home visits with elders
living in poverty for comprehensive assessments.
- David
Holden lectures on Medicate finances for the elderly in the Community
Health class. He lectures on programs such as Affordable Medicine Options
for Seniors (AMOS).
- Our
students also participate in the Mobile Meals program, part of the Office
on Aging.
Research
- From
2005 to 2007 Dr. Callen served on the Caregiver Health Promotion Committee
research project funded by a grant to the Office on Aging
- Dr.
Callen serves on the One Call Club for Seniors. This four year project is
funded by a one million dollar grant from Robert Wood Johnson.
- Dr.
Callen has partnered with the Office on Aging on several research projects
including a study to examine the effect of Meals on Wheels on the
rehospitalization of older adults. This study had just been approved by
the three IRBs needed to conduct the study.
- A
second study partnering with the Office on Aging will examine the effects
of Meals on Wheels post hospitalization. A grant was recently submitted to
the USDA for $400,00.
Community
Service
- Dr.
Callen serves on the Knoxville/Knox County Council on Aging Executive
Committee which has oversight over the Office on Aging.
- Dr.
Callen is a board member of the East Tennessee Council on Aging and
Disabilities.
Through these
partnerships the College of Nursing has had a long and fruitful partnership
with the Office on Aging.
