Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month

Nearly 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, a brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. Early symptoms of Alzheimer's are sometimes mistaken for normal aging, so read about the different types and different causes of forgetfulness at http://www.nia.nih.gov/HealthInformation/Publications/forgetfulness.htm

Although there isn't yet a cure for Alzheimer's, early diagnosis can help to treat the symptoms. Learn more about Alzheimer's disease by checking out some questions and answers from the National Institutes of Health via http://nihseniorhealth.gov/alzheimersdisease/faq/faqlist.html

If you like to be informed by emails such as this, you may subscribe to one or more Senior Citizens' pages at http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Seniors.shtm

You can also get the latest official government information from http://www.usa.gov/ and connect with government on Facebook and Twitter.

May is Older Americans Month Since the first Older Americans Month in 1963, United States citizens have acknowledged the contributions of older persons. It is celebrated across the country with ceremonies, events, fairs, and other activities. Each year the Administration on Aging (AoA) issues a theme for Older Americans Month. This year's theme, "Living Today for a Better Tomorrow," reflects AoA's continued focus on health and prevention efforts. In anticipation of Older Americans Month, the Census Bureau released a fact sheet (http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/cb09ff-07.pdf) describing America's 2009 older demographic. For more information on Older Americans Month, click http://www.aoa.gov/AoARoot/Press_Room/Observances/oam/oam.aspx

2008 COGS Showcase: A University-Community Partnership

November 18, 2008, at the Burlington Public Library, Knoxville, TN.

In an effort to bring the university faculty and researchers’ work to the local community, the University of Tennessee Community of Gerontology Scholars (COGS), the Senior Citizen Home Assistance Services (SCHAS), and the Covenant Health Senior Services co-sponsored the 2008 COGS Showcase. The event was well attended by local residents, community leaders, senior services providers, university faculty members, and college students. The program figured six scholarly presentations as well as an expert panel discussion. The presenters and their topics included: Dr. Sandra McGuire: UTK, Gerontology, and the Community; Ms. Cynthia Finch, Community Involvement; Dr. Deborah Reed, In Sickness and in Health: A Lifetime of Farm Work; Dr. Jan Brown, Healthy Aging through Volunteering; Dr. Becky Fields, Successful Partnerships for Health Promotion; and Dr. Shu-li Chen, Residential Decisions among Older Adults. Mr. Tim Howell, Chief Operations Officer of the SCHAS, joined the panel discussion. The panel and the event participants had interesting and informative discussions on many issues pertinent to healthy aging and family caregiving, such as: positive attitude toward aging, emphasis on positive image of aging (e.g. volunteers and aging workforce), access to helpful and useful resources to promote elders’ home stay, importance of early planning for a happy later life, and the impacts of Medicaid Waiver program on home and community-based services. A special thanks was given to Mr. Jeff Johnston and the staff at the Burlington Public Library for their support to such community enrichment event.

This article is written by Dr. Shu-li Chen, Associate Professor, the University of Tennessee College of Nursing.
